In the hymn “God of Grace and God of Glory” we implore Almighty God to “save us from weak resignation to the evils we deplore.” These days the warnings of Isaiah 5:20 “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil” are truer than ever! Politicians never make good theologians because they never want to offend anyone who might make a conribution, bolster their voting block, or owe a favor. So when a politician uses the word “deplorable” we need to check the touchstone of God’s Word to see if its meaning is being altered.
Racism and race-baiting are deplorable. Demagoguery by would-be demi-gods is idolatry. Adultery and enabling adultery is mortal sin. Abortion is the murder of a human being forbidden by “Thou shalt not kill.” Requiring health care to provide abortifacients and to pay for abortion uses the force of law to subsidize mass murder (over 57,000,000 Americans have been executed legally in this country, many of them by Planned Parenthood which receives $500,000,000/year in government subsidies). Sexual perversion is described as a deplorable abomination throughout God’s Word. Counterfeiting marriage is deplorable and devalues this divine institution. Demi-gods who would speak for God and declare that His Word is wrong and all churches need to conform to the “enlightenment” dictated from politicians are deplorable and should read Romans 12:23 immediately.
Shouting to drown out dissent when logic, conscience, the Word of God and right reason are all against you is deplorable. “All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23). We all need to repent of our sins and receive His grace. We all need to inform our consciences to see clearly the difference between good and evil and pray the God of grace and God of glory to save us from weak resignation to the evil He deplores and which we, as His faithful disciples deplore, as well–even as we try to share His love as winsomely as possible.
The truth of God’s Word is that Judgment Day is coming. It is deplorable to tell people to remain comfortable in their sin and remain under His wrath. That is something politicians of all parties can do to win votes, but it is not something a church which strives to follow God’s Word faithfully and lovingly can ever do. May God bless us with His love as we do our best to love our neighbors as ourselves, to pray even for our enemies, and work to build a more perfect union.
May God give the voters of this land wisdom from on high as they head to the polls to select candidates to serve local, state, and federal offices, even as we pray for our elected leaders as He commands in Romans 13.
