“Do not forget to enterain strangers, for by so doing some have entertained angels without knowing it.” Hebrews 13:2. I have heard this verse hung out there as something of a faith-walking Lotto urging believers to gamble on hospitality toward strangers so they don't lose out on the big one if an angel should show up. I don't think the Holy Spirit inspired that meaning into the text. In fact, I am sure He didn't.
Founded on God's gracious gift of saving faith in Christ Jesus, we as His redeemed people are to live graciously, sharing the most important (see Mary and Martha for the 1 thing needful) dimension of life with family, extended family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, classmates, and even strangers AS GOD GIVES US OPPORTUNITY. Too often people who literally cannot keep their mouths shut about their favorite athlete, performer, politician, or entertainer are able to stifle any prompting the Holy Spirit might attempt to use to bring a conversational or service opening into a witnessing opportunity.
Abraham, Lot, those who were in the presence of the pre-incarnate Christ, and New Testament believers who at times bumbled into God's appointed spirit-being messengers never earned the right of an audience. Instead God graciously sent an angel, archangel, principality, power, cherubim, or seraphim to carry His message. Often the message was Good News for Christ's sake. At times the angel brought news of impending judgment.
Around the altar of God at Christ's holy meal we are in the presence of angels and archangels and all the company of heaven. As sinners we feast upon the Body and Blood of our Lord, according to His institution and He graces us with strength and forgiveness for our lives of bearing His message to our world, including strangers. As we go about heralding His News (everyone needs a Savior from sin, death and the power of the devil AND PRAISE GOD FROM WHOM ALL BLESSINGS FLOW HE HAS GRACIOUSLY PROVIDED EXACTLY THE SAVIOR WE NEED IN CHRIST JESUS) we may entertain literal angels or fellow human messengers with a comforting Word of God's gracious action to buoy our faith.
